We originally planned to leave Racine, Wisconsin today for Chicago, but
the lake was too lumpy (aka rough). This
past week, Lake Michigan has seen strong southerly winds that have cause high
waves to build up (one to three feet near shore and four to six feet offshore). Tomorrow the winds will shift to the west
initially and then clock around to the north, but still strong. So we have a weather window mid-morning tomorrow
to try for Chicago. But wave height is only
part of the equation as we will be dodging scattered thunderstorms that will be
in the area pretty much all day long.
Our destination tomorrow is DuSable harbor, right near Navy
Pier on Chicago’s lakefront. Tomorrow
evening our great friend Hal Gilpin will join us for the first few days as we experience
navigating bridges and locks for the first time.
Having a third crew member will be very helpful indeed.
