Ashburnham, Ontario

Friday, July 28, 2017.  This was a longer day, 38 miles, but only one lock.  From Hastings, Ontario we traveled through Rice Lake and up the Otonabee River.  Our destination was Peterborough, Ontario.  Peterborough is the site of the first of two lift locks on the Trent-Severn Waterway.  (More on the lift locks later.)  The weather was nice and the lake was cooperative.  Following winds put the waves on our stern.

We arrived at the wall at the bottom of Lock 20 (Ashburnham) at 2:00 pm.  From this lock you can walk into the town of Peterborough.  Typically there are places to tie up your boat on the lock walls on both the lower and upper sides of the lock.  But not at Lock 20, you had to tie up at the bottom.  This was unfortunate, because the locks open at 9:00 in the morning, but by the time the lock staff is ready to go, it’s nearly 10:00 before the first group of boaters can lock through.

Paul and Taffy and Nancy and Carey walked into town to look around and we ended up staying for dinner.  It was a good day.  The total lift for the day (all locks) was 8 feet.
